Since the 2006 release of their self-titled album, the guys in Boys Like Girls have had a sudden rise to fame. Their debut album proved to be a big hit, and after a long wait, they have a newly released album: Love Drunk.
Upon hearing that a new Boys Like Girls album was in the making, my excitement was through the roof. I’m not going to lie, I had a lot riding on this album, BLG being my favourite band and all. When the first track, sharing the same name as the album, was released, I quickly jumped to listen. My first thought? This sounds a lot like The Killers’ ‘Somebody Told Me.’ Crap. My initial reaction didn’t stop me from listening to the track many a time, though. On September 8th, Love Drunk was officially released in stores, and I quickly headed to the nearest CD store to pick up a copy.
As the first song, entitled ‘Heart Heart Heartbreak’ began to play, it was love at first sound. It’s catchy, with the typical heartbreak lyrics. As I progressed through the album, I realized that the long wait definately showed in the songs. All were well thought out, and very well written. Boys Like Girls have stayed relatively true to their sound, with such songs as ‘Contagious,’ and ‘Chemicals Collide’ having similar qualities as songs on the debut. Although most of the sound is similar, BLG has also picked a different sound on songs such as ‘Real Thing,’ and ‘Shot Heard Round the World.’ Now, a Boys Like Girls album wouldn’t be the same without a fair share of love songs. ‘Two is Better Than One’, featuring Taylor Swift, proves to be a beautiful song. Lead singer Martin and Taylor sound absolutely amazing together, making it even better.
So, after having a few listenings through the album, I had my verdict. Although having one Killers-sounding song, Boys Like Girls has once again made a wonderfully catchy album, with great lyrics and melodies. If you haven’t picked up a copy yet, get out there and pick one up.
