Jupiter One is from New York and are signed to indie label, Rykodisc. The band’s current lineup includes K Ishibashi on vocals, guitar and violin, Zac Colwell, also a vocalist who also plays guitar and keyboards, Dave Heilman on the drums, Mocha, on keyboards, vocals, and violin, and last but not least, Pat “Panda” Doherty on bass.
Double Dance was in contact with the Jason from Muse Box who helped us set up a phone interview with K! (note: not all of the interview is included, but it’s still pretty awesome!)
How did the band get started?
Well we kinda started off as like an instrumental group, me and Zach together, you know the song writer for the band who’s also the guitar player. We kinda met in the, we met at the traveling circus, playing in the band, we were like roommates, and he played saxophone.
We kinda started making things together, that was 8 years ago.
So has the Jupiter One actually been around for 8 years then?
No, not really, it really became a rock band maybe like 5 years ago.
Where did the name Jupiter One come from?
It started off, I named Jupiter One and then later we found out that it was actually a space ship in Lost In Space and it was actually the spaceship that didn’t make it. The one that did make it was the Jupiter 2.
What are some of Jupiter One’s major influences?
Definitely the really good stuff, starting with The Beatles, then obviously into Pink Floyd, anything good like the ’60s, ’70s, like any kind of good song, like a Bob Dylan song. We like Bowie a lot (David Bowie) and we like ELO. And, it’s just like a crazy wide range of influences, you can probably tell from our album that we have a lot of influences, just anything good.
If you could tour with any band, who would you tour with?
That’s a good question. We’ve always wanted to tour with Of Montreal, but you know haha, we’re still working on that. But I guess, The Flaming Lips, I guess, that’s probably our dream tour to open up for The Flaming Lips, cause they’re just like really cool.
Jupiter One has a new album coming out September 15th, what can fans expect from this new album, that might make it different from the other albums?
Basically this album, we really tried to go for like a ’70s kind of sound, our old album was kind of an ’80s, kind of poppy sound, with lots of synthesizers, but our new album is really pretty different, it’s a lot darker, and I think it’s a lot deeper. It’s also, still the same kind of songwriting even though we tried to make it sound real different. We tried to get it more, to remind people of the golden era of recording, probably a little more rock and roll, like Led Zeppeliny. That kind of stuff.
What is something that most fans might not know about the band?
Like, I’m an Asian singer? We have really good live shows, like pretty intense, like really tight. We’re not millionaires like they might think, so they should come out and support us, come to shows.
What’s your favorite color?
My favorite color’s blue, I think that’s the drummer’s favorite color too. It might be men’s favorite color.
Anything else, that you would like to add?
We have four new videos coming out off the new album, so that’s pretty cool. All different directors, we’re also touring with Regina Spektor, pretty cool, we’re pretty excited about that. And, that’s about it, come check is out, we have a new website coming out, pretty crazy artwork on it.
As mentioned earlier, Jupiter One does have a new album coming out September 15th titled, Sunshower, so be on the lookout for it!
Thank you K for the awesome interview and to Jason from The Muse Box for setting it up.
