Not that good: The Arctic Monkeys’ “Humbug”

Arctic Monkeys' "Humbug"We all remember the Arctic Monkeys, right? You know, they’re that little Brit rock band from Sheffeild, England. I’m pretty sure the very first time I heard them was a few years ago while lying in bed listening to The Zone @ 91.3. Yup, the song was “I Bet You Look Good On The Dancefloor”. It was magical, like listening to a whole other genre of music, as I hadn’t really been exposed to that much British music. I’ll never forget that night, honestly.

What ever happened to that?

Oh right, Josh Homme happened to that. Mr. Homme, the front man of stoner-rock band Queens of the Stone Age, was a leading factor in this record, as he helped co-produce it.

Now, I have no real problem with QOTSA; they do their own thing. And if their own thing consists of making psychedelic distortion, hey, power to them! I love them for it! But it’s when they try and interfere with other band’s music that I start to get a little annoyed. The Arctic Monkeys were fast, quick-paced rockers buzzing about, making their own name; and it’s as if Josh Homme walked in and was like “Hey, settle down. Just settle the fuck down.” and turned them in to a bunch of drones.

The single, “Crying Lightning”, which I heard on The Zone once again, was a prime example of his work, and how he turned them around completely. I personally, didn’t mind the single. But just the single. I wasn’t expecting a whole record of this stuff. I really wasn’t.

Review cut short: bad.
