One Band Takes It “Over the Top”

These days, it takes a lot to get noticed in the music scene. Bands form at the speed of a million a minute, waiting for that big break or to be signed by a record label. This is hard enough as it is, but then when you add in the difficulty of living on an island so far east in Canada that it has its own time zone, that contains only one city, and costs a small fortune to get to, you are pretty much screwed. However, Newfoundland’s own Over the Top have been absolutely tearing up the music scene on the island, turning heads and getting a reaction from everyone.

The band has been together for a mere four months, and only played their first show two months ago. Yet they already have their first EP, titled “Home Is Where Our Friends Are” under their belts, and they are not stopping anytime soon. The EP is available for download on their myspace, and it is freePerhaps they should rename to Over the Pop(corn)?, so there is absolutely no reason not to check it out. They also encourage you to burn it and pass it out to your friends. What is not to love?

“Home Is Where Our Friends Are” is full of catchy riffs, sing-a-longs, and is what hardcore should be like: loud, fast, and fun. With the first lyric of the album being “this honesty breaks down walls,” you know you are in for a treat. Clever titles such as “They Must Be Ninjas (‘Cause This Song Kicks Butt!!)” and “Stupid Lisa Garbage Face” (taken from a classic episode of The Simpsons) put smiles on your face before even hearing the songs, and once you do, you just smile more. The album closes with the lyrics “my friends stick by my side; we won’t bend or betray” and group vocals, leaving you with a sense of friendship and unity that is almost lost in hardcore these days.

This is just the beginning for Over the Top, and it is clear that they are something special. Take the five minutes out of your day to download the album. You will not regret it.
