The Maine releases Warped 2009 photo/journal book!

Posted on 03 Dec 2009 at 4:24pm

Pop rock sensation The Maine partook on this years Vans Warped Tour, and they spent most of their time, when not on stage or living it up, writing in their journals and taking pictures to document the whole tour and experience. They’ve now released it all as a hardcover book, entitled the “This Is Real Life” Book.

The idea behind it is, to show life on the road, from our perspective, and in our own words. The entries in this book are the exact thoughts, feelings, and memories from each day on the tour. We met great people, we worked hard, and made it through the good and the bad of summer! Take a look through each and every day of tour. Day in and day out, this is real life…

Along with the hardcover book, it comes with a special digital version of the unreleased “This Is Real Life” EP! All y’alls can pre-order the book right now from The Maine’s web store for just $20! It’s all sent out on December 14th. And to make things even better, if you pre-order right now, a limited number of order will come with an autographed poster! So GO GO GO.

Warped 2009: 3 out of 5

Posted on 18 Aug 2009 at 9:48am

Being on the road is rather boring for me, as I’ve no internet and my phone has no signal where I’m at (in the middle of many mountains and a lot of trees), so figured right now would be a nice time to recap this past Friday when I travelled from my tiny island to Vancouver and hit up the Vans Warped Tour. It was a dazzling experience, at that, and I’ve many a photos to show you–soon.

The day started out as crazy as could be, with line-ups for blocks, and promises of pre-sale ticket holders to get in first (by the way, never happened). Getting there at a rather early hour helped, and within an hour or so we were let in the gates and started to roam—but not before we had our press wristbands. We were led in all directions a number of times by clueless security who, a few times, didn’t even know fluent English. But it was fine, we eventually got sorted out, grabbed the wristbands, and went straight to it. Finding out All Time Low was cancelled (lost passports I hear?) was quite a bummer, and the press coordinator was being rather rude, so I signed up for my interviews and was promised that I’d get a call with some interview slots; never even happened. So to break it short, there was no interviews for us at Warped Tour this year.

We did, however, have some pretty shnazzy opportunities for photo pit shots, and we came through on that one. In a photo gallery that should go up soon, you’ll see that we’ve got The Devil Wears Prada, Meg and Dia, Forever the Sickest Kids, 3Oh!3, Alexisonfire, and a ton more. Along with the on-site gallery, you can find all our photos on my Flickr photostream here.

All-in-all, I’d say the tour stop was 3 out of 5 stars, as compared to other stops along the way. There were quite a few bands that simply couldn’t make it to Vancouver (Canada, for that matter) for various reasons, including Chiodos, Never Shout Never!, All Time Low, and Anti-Flag; but those who did make it, like Underoath, The Devil Wears Prada, Bad Religion, and 3Oh!3, they certainly made it a memorable experience. I’d like to also give kudos to all the local bands who got play the Kevin Says Stage in Vancouver; they did a stellar job.

The photos should be up soon!

Interview with MONTY ARE I!

Posted on 16 Aug 2009 at 4:55pm

Monty Are I is a band from Providence, Rhode Island. The band’s 5 members are: lead vocalist, Steve Aiello who also plays guitar, Justin Muir on drums, Ryan Muir on vocals, guitar and trumpet, Andrew Borstein who plays keys and trombone, and Mike Matarese on bass.

Andrew was kind enough to do an interiew for Double Dance!

How did Monty Are I get started?

- All 5 of us grew up in the same town together in Cranston, Rhode Island,
most of us within a few blocks of each other. And we were all in school
band together–concert and marching band. One winter there was a talent
show being held at our high school and Steve, our lead singer/guitarist,
wanted to get a band together to play in it. So he asked a bunch of his
classmates to join him. All we needed now was a name.

Where did the name come from?

- Our beloved band teacher’s name was Arthur “Monty” Montanaro. So we
decided to bust his chops and go on stage at the talent show calling
ourselves “Monty’s Fan Club.” Some years later, we started taking the band
seriously and eventually got signed. The lawyers at the label told us our
name was at legal risk for lawsuit because it was too similar to other
existing artists’ names. So we had to change it, and we ended up with
“Monty Are I.” We’re simultaneously saying that we are still the same band
we’ve always been, and we’re repping our home state (RI) with a little
play on words.

What is the band currently up to?

- We are currently driving in our van from Vancouver to Edmonton, Canada.
We’re in the middle of a month long tour with our good friends in the Red
Jumpsuit Apparatus
. We’re also getting ready to release our new album,
called Break Through The Silence, on September 22. And our first single
from that album will probably go online later today on our myspace.

You guys played a couple weeks on Warped Tour this summer, is that
something you’d like to do again?

- Yes definitely. We have a much longer history than some people realize
with Warped Tour and the Ernie Ball Stage. We played the Ernie Ball stage
for 3 years before we were signed. We won the Ernie Ball Battle of the
Bands
national contest  in 2003, and that’s where the relationship
started. Now we’re sponsored by Ernie Ball and Steve and Mike our bassist
play their custom guitars exclusively. We owe a lot of our initial success
as an independent band to Warped Tour.

In one word, describe what Monty Are I sounds like:

- Epic.

What are some of Monty Are I’s major influences?

- Everyone in the band would answer differently for their own personal
influences. For ex: Steve, the primary song writer, would mention
Metallica, Guns ‘N Roses, and Goldfinger. Justin might say Rx Bandits,
Ryan might say Ben Folds, Mike might say Stone Temple Pilots, and I might
say Gavin Castleton. But as a band, we can all agree we’re heavily
influenced by bands that rock, that are exciting, and that know how to
write good pop songs. And by pop, I mean popular songs that appeal to lots
of different types of people.

If you could tour with any band, who would you choose?

- That’s a tough one. Right now, I think we’d probably agree that Muse is
on the top of our list.

Do you have a favorite venue that you’ve played at?

- We have lots of favorites for different reasons. I’d rather mention that
our favorite states to play in are Montana, Wyoming and Louisiana. They
always bring it! Seriously, we have had some of our most ridiculous shows
in those states. I think kids there can appreciate it more when they only
get to see touring bands very rarely.

Who in the band writes the music?

- Steve is the primary song writer and idea generator. Pretty much all our
songs start from one of Steve’s ideas. Then the rest of us take those
ideas and totally change them around, and add ourselves into them. Or
sometimes we barely touch them at all. We are definitely a band of 5
producers, so we all like to have input on what everyone is doing in a
given song, the arrangement, overall sound and theme. We write songs by
demoing them on our computer, so we can hear exactly how we want them to
sound on CD.

What are the bands future plans?

- We plan on releasing our new album in just over a month, touring nonstop
to support it, and then taking over the world. In that order.

now a fun one… what’s your favorite animal?
- Leopard. By the name of Leonard.

Big thanks to Andrew for the interview! Monty Are I’s new album “Break Through Silence” comes out September 22nd, but you can check the band’s new single now on their myspace!

Top 5 bands Kaitlin recommends you see at Warped Tour!

Posted on 07 Aug 2009 at 6:43pm

Warped tour is already almost over, but there are still some more dates. Not sure who to see? I went to Warped Tour yesterday, and I’ve got you covered!

Top 5 bands in no particular order:

1. Big D and the Kids Table: This Boston ska/punk band knows how to have a good time! You can find them on the Hurley.com stage for the entire tour. If you’re looking for a good time check them out!

2. Therefore I Am: Although they may not have the biggest crowd, they sure know how to rock! One thing they really know how to do, is put on a show. Check them out on the Skullcandy Stage.

3. Bouncing Souls: The Bouncing Souls celebrated their 20th anniversary this year. What else is there to say? One of the best punk rock bands out there, and they’re really awesome live! They’re playing on the main stage which means a 40 minute set!

4. Black Tide: While listening to these guys, you may find yourself thinking that you’re listening to a classic metal band… They even have a Metallica cover! Although they’re young, they know how to shred! Watch for them on the Hurley.com stage.

…and last, but CERTAINLY not LEAST…

5. Less Than Jake: Hands down, best performance of the day (in my opinion). They don’t just get up their and play, they entertain! The crowd is definitely involved, but watch out, people go crazy skanking! Less Than Jake is also on the main stage, which is a good thing since they have so many awesome songs!

These weren’t the only bands I saw, merely my top 5 of the day. Other bands I saw throughout the day, and would recommend include: Westbound Train, Streetlight Manifesto, Meg and Dia, and definitely punk greats, Bad Religion.

Tweet your bestest interview question ever and get featured!

Posted on 29 Jul 2009 at 11:39pm

So, you may have heard that Double Dance is going to be heading to this years Vans Warped Tour; our date is August 14th and it’s in Vancouver, BC (are you going?)!

Well, as we’re going, we’ll be doing press there, and along with the usual reviewing sets and checking out the entertainment, we’ll be interviewing bands performing at the Vancouver date! Now, here’s where you come in!

We want you to have your own question answered by the bands we interview, so we’ve come up with the Warped Dance Twitter contest. We only find out our interview schedule the day of the event, so there’s no telling what bands we’ll interview, but here is a quick list of some of the top acts performing that we’ll try to talk to:

  • 3OH!3
  • A Skylit Drive
  • Alexisonfire
  • All Time Low
  • Breathe Carolina
  • Escape The Fate
  • Forever The Sickest Kids
  • Scary Kids Scaring Kids
  • The Devil Wears Prada
  • The Maine
  • Underoath

Along with our usual questions, we will be asking every band one certain question, which will be determined by someone on Twitter! So, all you have to do is tweet out your own question and then slap the tag #warpeddance somewhere on it. A day or so before the event, we will choose the winning question, ask every band we interview the question, and then feature the winning question and user on the home page!

Do it: Ask a question or follow us on Twitter!

Please keep all questions clean, or they will be ignored. No writers for Double Dance are eligible.
